[d-star] A Portable Mesh Network?

Given this:

should be: http://www.hsmm-mesh.org/
 
It just so happens I have one of those WRT54G sitting around. Would this
mesh network mix with a normal household network for testing or do I need
two WRT54Gs? 
 
I haven't heard of another one of those weekend workshops scheduled. Are
they regularly scheduled or as needed?
