D-STAR and MotoTRBO are the two fully networked digital voice modes for VHF/UHF. 
Until now, ICOM was the only manufacturer of off-the-shelf D-STAR radios, and MOTOTRBO (generically called DMR) was available only in commercial radios. 

Both of those paradigms become history with a new radio in the works from Connect Systems, Inc. 
The CS7000 will combine DMR and D-STAR (and analog FM) in a handheld radio first (mobile maybe next year). 
And it's going to be fairly cheap!

CSI's CEO Jerry Wanger (a former Novice, and about to be re-licensed) gave me the details in this interview, HamRadioNow Episode 138.
