[d-star] New D-Star Site and Grant Funding

The Statewide Network has a "don't ask don't tell" lease clause with several
site owners. We also have a "stealth antenna" clause. They can understand
our strong public service message but don't want every ham in the State
calling them for space.

Hams have a well deserved reputation for "junking up" sites- adding all
kinds of clutter and unauthorized extra equipment and massive new antennas
and turning a tidy and professional equipment room + rooftop into a flea
market. Building owners take a lot of pride in their facilities - they put
up with a little of this only from paying site rental customers. I am
having trouble communicating this wisdom to the community here. I need to
write an article for QST...

The person involved is a ham and I was talking up our project, web site, etc
which I do all the time

We provide a nice 10 page proposal describing our public service mission and
our accomplishments and published articles and have perfect references.

You need an "elevator pitch" of why a building owner should take on the
hassle and significant liability and exposure (lightning) etc of having our
gear up there.

We have one at least one shared site - well engineered, modern type accepted
equipment esp on different bands is not a big threat. The big issue- piling
on to site that already has amateur gear and modified, wide, old converted
equipment- this can be tricky.

We are running unmodified, modern Amateur type accepted FM mobiles on all
our sites- zero issues. We have no cans or filters or intermod anywhere.

What site might that be? I cringe at the thought of the RF environment up
there...

We got our first D-Star specific corporate matching grant today, which
includes access to a 450 foot + Minneapolis Downtown rooftop site.
